Weekly News Update

The Tigers poor start to the season has continued after the international break. A point at home to fellow strugglers Preston North End was not enough and then another late goal cost City a hard-fought point away at Bristol City on Wednesday night.

Improvements must be made with relegation looking more likely with every passing week. City head to an out of form Bolton Wanderers this weekend and it is imperative they come back from Lancashire wth at least a point.

Here’s your update from the trust this week……

Wembley Stadium Sale Called Off.
The proposed sale of Wembeley Stadium has been called off after Shahid Khan, owner of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham FC, withdrew his £600m offer  – citing a lack of support across the game.

More than 2,000 supporters took part in the Footiball Supporters Federation consultation on the sale.

You can read details of the FSF Survey results here.

Funds available for Local Youth Football teams.
Do You (or someone you know) run a Hull Boys Sunday Football team or an East Riding Girls Team?

The collapse of the  Wembley sale might result in no extra funds going to grass roots football, but  don’t worry – funding is available locally.

Several years ago, the then Tigers Co-Operative, now Hull City Supporters Trust, donated £6,000 to support local youth football teams.

For more details of the scheme follow the link here.

There are still funds available, of up to £100 per team. All you need to do is complete the application form available here.

Development Review
Last Saturday the under 18 side travelled to the Barnfield Training Centre take on Burnley.

Despite hitting the post twice and a goal from Will Jarvis, Burnley were to prove too good winning 3-1.  On Saturday they take on Sheffield United at Bishop Burton in an 11:00 kick off.

After the disappointing 1-1 draw against Preston North End last Saturday it was the turn of the under 23 side to entertain the fans who stayed behind.  The match was not a classic and City had the chance to goal ahead late in the second half but Callum Smith crashed his penalty against the bar.  In keeping with recent first team performances the game was lost in added time when defensive mistakes provided Sheffield Wednesday with the only goal of the game.  On Monday they travel to fellow Yorkshire rivals Leeds United for a 13:00 kick off.

Two members of the senior squad had a run out in Saturday’s match with Ondrej Mazuch on for 80 minutes and David Milinkovic for the full 90.

Hull City Ladies
After a blank weekend last week, the Tigresses are on their travels this Sunday with an away fixture at Guiseley Vixens.

City are currently 3 places above their hosts n the table so will be confident of picking up a win to solidify their mid-table status

Weekly News Update

It’s back to domestic football this weekend after an excellent result for England against Spain on Monday.

Firstly City entertain fellow relegation zone occupiers Preston North End on Saturday. It might be too early to say it is a must win this early in the season however the Tigers need to start picking up points quickly!

City then head to Bristol City next Wednesday. We hope any dedicated enough to travel are rewarded with a scoreline similar to last season and we’re sure a point would be welcomed by the manager from a tough trip.

Here’s your update from the trust this week……

Petition – Yvonne Marie Blenkinsop on the Queen’s Honours list.
Last season HCST were proud to help organise the sale of the Hull City Comemorative Shirts worn against Chelsea to mark the 50th Anniversary of the ‘Triple Trawler Tragedy’.

There is a petition to try to get recognition for the last of the ‘Headscarf Revolutionaries’, Yvonne Blenkinsop (left) in the Queens Honours List.

We encourage all City fans to sign this petition to honour one of the ladies  whose campaigning brought about massive changes to the safety regulations for the Trawler Industry and saved countless lives.

The petition can be signed here.

Development Review
Last Saturday the under 18 side took on Sheffield Wednesday at Bishop Burton in very windy conditions.

After a level first half which ended 0-0 they went down to two second half goals one of which was from the penalty spot.  They are in action again on Saturday when they travel to take on Burnley.  Kick off is scheduled for 12:00 at the Barnfield Training Centre.

On Monday a young Under 23 side travelled to Bolton Wanderers in a game very much of two halves.  After managing to survive 0-0 in first half the pressure finally told and the Wanderers scored four unanswered goals in the second half.  As Steve Bruce would say ‘we dust ourselves down and go again.’

This time they will play at the KCOM stadium when they take on Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday straight after the first team take on Preston North End on Saturday.  The match is scheduled to start at 17:00 and we hope that fans will stay and support our up and coming players.

The good form of Keane Lewis-Potter has been noted elsewhere with a mention in a FourFourTwo article by Talentspotter “Revealed! EVERY Championship club’s most exciting youth prospect” You can read the article here.

Hull City Ladies
The Tigresses were pushed all the way last Sunday in their National Cup match against their lower league opponents Birmingham & West Midlands Ladies.Extra time was needed to clinch a 2-1 win and a place in the next round.

The First Teams game at home to Sheffield FC Ladies scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled by the League. The game has been rearranged for 11th November.

The Reserves are playing in the the East Riding Cup away at Hull Kingston Ladies.

Weekly News Update

A disappointing defeat against Sheffield Utd has left City bottom of the Championship. It looked like the Tigers may have been heading for a point against their Yorkshire rivals and had just created their best opportunity of the game before giving away yet another cheap goal. This time it came from the penalty spot after a needless grapple in the box.
The result put Sheffield Utd top of the table, which doesn’t make a 1-0 defeat look too bad, however it is another game City have thrown away which is a very worrying trend.
No club football this weekend, which might be a good thing!

The Football Supporters Federation (FSF) are again promoting National Non-League Day on Saturday 13th October.
With the international break meaning that no Premier League or Championship fixtures will be taking place over that weekend – Non-League Day (now in its 9th year) gives fans who normally follow the professional game a chance to sample their local non-league team.

#worldmentalhealthday – MindHEY
Wednesday 10th October was #worldmental healthday. This week we are featuring the work of HCST Community Partner Hull & East Yorkshire Mind.
Hull and East Yorkshire Mind is a local mental health charity, working so that everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.
The impact of mental illness can be devastating. Not only for those directly affected but also their families, friends, colleagues and loved ones.
Hull and East Yorkshire Mind helps people improve their mental health. They work with individuals to support them in a way that works for them- building confidence and social networks, helping people establish a safe place to live and call home, helping people to find hope and to recover.
They also work to prevent mental ill health through education and prevention work, and we campaign to challenge the stigma and discrimination that sometimes occurs with mental health problems.
Mind have linked with the English Football League to promote awareness about mental health, and HCST have partnered with the Hull and East Yorkshire branch to tie in with that.
More information about Hull and East Yorkshire Mind can be found on their website here. They are also active on Facebook & Twitter.
Hull City Ladies
City Ladies started well against Sunderland Ladies in their league encounter last Sunday but ultimately went down to a 4-2 defeat against their more experienced opponents.
This week, league action is put to one side as the Tigresses host Birmingham & West Midlands Ladies FC in the FA Women’s National League Cup.
Kick off on Sunday at the Hull University Sports Ground on Inglemire Lane is 2pm as usual, so if you need a football fix and can’t make a non-league game this weekend then go and show our Ladies some support.

SportyCo – Hull City Proposal

Following on from the press release issued at 5pm on Monday 8th October about a potential bid for Hull City Fo犀利士
otball Club, the Hull City Supporters Trust (HCST) would like to issue some clarity on the situation.

HCST have and remain focused on improving the Club – supporters’ relationship on numerous issues, all of which have been well documented previously.

The Trust Board have been aware of various levels of interest from 3rd parties for a considerable period of time in making approaches to purchase the Club, and earlier this year, HCST were approached by a representative on behalf of SportyCo in relation to their own proposal.

SportyCo were keen to understand the background to the current issues affecting the supporters and discussed a model that could result in an opportunity for Hull City supporters to invest in the Club to generate funds and an element of fan ownership, as well as a place on the Club Board for supporter representation.

HCST understands that there is funding available from SportyCo and other US & UK based investors to facilitate the purchase price offered. Blackbridge Sports are actively working with all parties to support the process.

The meetings and negotiations with the Allam family will be led wholly by SportyCo and their representatives, and only when any deal reaches an agreement between both parties will the opportunities for supporter investment materialise.

HCST have not used any funds as part of the process to date, nor have we been asked to and at the current time there is nothing to consult with our valued members on as the offer to the Allam family is purely a proposal.

As we have repeatedly stated, HCST will always wish to promote a positive supporter’s relationship with the Club and remain open to doing so with any responsible future owner whom we hope are in place over the coming months.

We welcome the direct approach made by SportyCo to assist them in their proposal and are encouraged by their willingness to offer greater supporter representation than the current owners and hope this is a move that is replicated by alternative owners should their offers be accepted by the Allam family.

SportyCo and their representatives will present their proposal to the Allam family over the coming weeks, and until the outcome of those negotiations are known, further details of potential working capital and investment opportunities will not be available.

We wish all interested parties currently bidding for Hull City Football Club well with their negotiations and look forward to working positively with any new owners in the future.

Weekly News Update

Another week passes and another pair of mixed results.

Firstly City secured a commendable point, one they were good value for, against promotion favourites Middlesbrough last Saturday.

However, as this season seems to be panning out this was not built upon and what followed was a whimper of a performance against Leeds Utd. City lost 1-0 and never looked like scoring against their Yorkshire rivals.

Another Yorkshire derby follows this weekend as The Tigers travel to in-form Sheffield Utd. City will be hoping there will be no repeat of the result from the corresponding fixture from last season and a point would be a good return.

Here’s your update from the Trust this week…

The Ownership Situation – HCST’s position.
HCST were made aware of the persistent rumours regarding Paul Duffen and his bid which has became public this week.

We will welcome any responsible owners who embrace Supporters views and look forward to working with whoever takes over the club in due course.

Meanwhile HCST will continue to directly press the club for as yet unanswered questions raised in recent weeks.

HCST Chairman on Radio Humberside
HCST Chairman Geoff Bielby appeared on the David Burns show on 4th October to discuss the potential sale of the club.

You can hear Geoff speaking here – (from about 16 minutes in for 5 minutes.)

Supporters Direct – Fan Survey on Wembley Sale
As you may be aware the FA Board has approved in principle the sale of Wembley stadium to Shahid Khan, the owner of Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham FC, for £600 million.

The process now moves to the FA Council meeting later this month when Council members are asked to approve that decision.

SD in conjunction with the FSF are asking for fans views on the matter to allow the two Supporters members on the Council to truly represent fans views.

More details & a link to the survey can be found here.

FSF – National Non-League Day
The Football Supporters Federation (FSF) are again promoting National Non-League Day on Saturday 13th October.

With the international break meaning that no Premier League or Championship fixtures will be taking place over that weekend – Non-League Day (now in its 9th year) gives fans who normally follow the professional game a chance to sample their local non-league team.

More details of the scheme & how to find a match near you can be found here.

Chris Cooper – Get well soon mate
It has come to our attention that long-time City fan & supporter of HCST is unwell.

The Trust Board send our best wishes to you and your family,  and hope that it isn’t long before we hear you singing at away matches again..

Development Review
The Under 18 side are in action tomorrow when they take on Leeds United away in an 11:00 kick off.

The Under 23 side travelled to Sheffield on Monday, where they earned a creditable 1-1 draw.  Keane Lewis-Potter was on the scoresheet again continuing a good run of form.  Tonight they travel down to Telford United’s ground to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in this season’s Premier League Cup.

Under 18’s keeper David Robson has been named in the Wales U17s squad to face Belarus, Kazakhstan and hosts Portugal in next week’s UEFA U17s 2019 European Qualification Tournament.  We wish him well.

Hull City Ladies
It’s been a busy week for the Tigresses who have had successive away games to Yorkshire rivals.

On Sunday our Ladies went down 1-4 to a very strong and more experienced Huddersfield team. Despite the result there was plenty of positives from a spirited team performance by the girls. However, they bounced back on Wednesday evening with a comfortable 2-0 win at the once mighty Doncaster Belles, condemning the hosts to an 8th successive league defeat.10 points from 7 matches now sees City Ladies sitting 7th in the table after a solid start to their first season at this level.

This Sunday the girls are at home to Sunderland Ladies, who are a former Women’s Super League team and currently sit 3rd with 5 wins from their 7 matches.Kick off time is back to the usual 2pm at the Hull University Sports Ground on Inglemire Lane. Don’t forget kids get in free and adult HCST members get a 20% discount on admission by showing your membership card.

Weekly News Update

City continued their poor start to the season with their worst performance thus far, going down 3-0 against Reading last Saturday. It was a woeful result against the Royals who were winless at home up until that point. The result puts City just outside the relegation zone with tough fixtures to come.

Promotion candidates Middlesbrough are the first of those tough fixtures on Saturday before a Yorkshire Derby clash with current league leaders Leeds Utd. An improvement in performance level is important but even at this early stage of the season the result is ultimately all that matters. Two more home defeats would be a huge blow to confidence.

Here’s your update from the Trust this week…

FSF – National Non-League Day
The Football Supporters Federation (FSF) are again promoting National Non-League Day on Saturday 13th October.

With the international break meaning that no Premier League or Championship fixtures will be taking place over that weekend – Non-League Day (now in its 9th year) gives fans who normally follow the professional game a chance to sample their local non-league team.

THAT Arsenal game – 10 Years ago this week.
Yesterday (27th September) is the 10th Anniversary of the famous victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium

City won the match 2-1 after conceding an unfortunate own-goal by Paul McShane, however two goals in four minutes from Geovanni and Daniel Cousin ensured victory for the Tigers.

Coincidentally, Daniel Cousin has this week been named as the Head Coach of the Gabon National team.

Development Review
Last week proved to be another mixed one for the Development sides.

The under 18 side took on Birmingham City at Bishop Burton College last Saturday and were leading 1-0 at half time thanks to a goal from Will Taylor.  Despite Rob Guilfoyle grabbing a second Birmingham proved too strong in the second half and ended up winning 2-4.  There is no league fixture for the side this weekend.

The under 23 side had a comfortable afternoon last Monday beating 0-3.  Jon Toral and Will Keane had a run out and got on the scoresheet with Keane Lewis-Power scoring the third.  On Monday they travel to Sheffield to take on United in a 14:00 Kick off.

Hull City Ladies
The Tigresses completed back to back wins with a hard fought 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest last Sunday, which was also their first away victory of the season.

This Sunday, our Ladies are on their travels again and facing tough opponents away at Huddersfield Town Ladies who currently sit 4th in the league with 4 wins in their 6 matches so far.But City Ladies have been adapting well to the demands of this league in recent weeks and confident of picking up a result.

Weekly News Update

The last two games have brought two rather contrasting performances. Firstly on Saturday City played arguably their best game of the season defeating an admittedly poor Ipswich Town team 2-0.

However, the chance to gather some momentum was lost on Tuesday night with a few players rested and a poor performance seeing City go down 2-1 at Wigan Athletic. One positive to draw from the defeat was Jarrod Bowen scoring in his second successive game, a return of goals similar to last season will be vital for survival.

This Saturday the Tigers head to fellow strugglers Reading. Given the games coming up for City over the next few weeks this surely falls into the ‘must not lose’ category. Safe journey to all those travelling.

Here’s your update from the Trust this week…

FSF – Hull City Fans Survey
The Football Supporters Federation (FSF) have asked HCST if we’d like to use their survey services to poll all Hull City Supporters on behalf of HCST and other participating fans groups.

The survey will be asking for information on how fans feel about a number of issues relating to the club, including Concessions, Ticketing and other areas.

The survey questions are currently being compiled by the Trust and will be open to all Hull City Fans.

We will inform people via social media / website when the survey is available.

No On The Day purchases for U23’s games.
The club announced on 6th September that you could no longer make On the Day purchases for the U23 games played at the Roy West Center

The announcements states “tickets will no longer be available to purchase on matchdays and that non – membership supporters wishing to attend must purchase a Match Card”

A number of our members have contacted us regarding this issue.

We have also been contacted by a number of Supporters Trusts asking how AWAY fans (and families of opposition players ) coming to these games can gain entry without first having to purchase a Match Card from the KCOM Stadium as a one-off usage.

The Trust wrote to the club on 12th September raising these matters and also reiterating our issue with the short notice period (two weeks) for the ‘free’ match Card signup.

At this point we have had no feedback from the club, but will continue to press them on this matter.

Development Review
It proved to be a mixed week for the Development sides.

The under 18 side managed to secure back to back points and kept a clean sheet when they travelled to Barnsley and secured a 0-0 result last Saturday.  They are back in action on Saturday when they take on Birmingham City in a 12:00 kick off at Bishop Burton College.

Birmingham City proved to be stiff opposition last Saturday when the under 23 side went down 3-0 away.  They have the chance to make amends on Monday when they travel to Burnley for a 14:00 kick off.

Sunday saw the debut of Hull born Max Clark for his new club Vitesse Arnhem who registered a 0-2 victory away to PEC Zwolle.  Max made his big breakthrough into the first team from the development squad last season, playing the majority of games at left back.  After failing to agree terms in the summer he decided to move to the Netherlands and join up with former City manager Leonid Slutsky.  We wish Max well for the rest of the season and will watch his development with interest

The Tigresses were in clinical form last Sunday against Fylde, with a very convincing 5-2 win in front of the watching Nigel Adkins.

This Sunday, the Ladies are on their travels away at Nottingham Forest. The hosts are level on points with City Ladies but have played a game more, so our girls will be confident of coming away with a  positive result..

Weekly News Update

It’s back to domestic actions this weekend after the international break. City entertain fellow strugglers Ipswich Town at the KCOM on Saturday knowing defeat would see the Tigers drop into the bottom three. It should provide a good opportunity to get a first home win of the season in what could be a nervy affair.

City then head to Wigan on Tuesday night. The Latics have impressed on their return to the Championship and sit an enviable position in the top half of the table. This will no doubt be a difficult game and a point would be a decent return.

Here’s your update from the Trust this week…

Supporters Committee Nominations
The Club have recently asked for nominations to this seasons Supporters Committee.

The Trust have a number of observations on this:

– The Club propose two meetings for this season, it is our understanding that this reduction goes against the recommendations made by the Football Supporters Federation (FSF).

– The Club will decide which fans can attend from each stand with no criteria given around the selection process, perhaps the club could run a ballot so fans can decide who will represent them?

– The Club have not made it clear at this point which Fans Organisations will be invited to attend, for open and meaningful dialogue no supporters organisation should be excluded.

We encourage all our members to submit applications if they are eligible.

More details on how to apply can be found here.

Board Meeting Minutes
On Monday 10th September the HCST board held our latest bi-monthly board meeting.

You can see what we discussed by reading the minutes which can be found here.

Development Review
Again the Development sides are showing improvement with each new fixture and the last 7 days have been good.

The under 18 side managed to secure their first point of the season back against Queens Park Rangers at Bishop Burton College last Saturday.  Jake Bayram’s second-half penalty secured the 1-1 draw.  This Saturday they are on their travels taking on Barnsley in an 11:00.

On Monday night the under 23 were excellent when they took on Watford at the Roy West Centre.  Lewis Ritson, Robbie McKenzie and Keane Lewis-Potter (2) scored the goals for Jon Beale’s side in a comprehensive 4-1 victory.  They are next in action away against Birmingham City this Saturday in a 12:00 kick off.

Last week we reported that free admission to under 23 games had been granted to all matchcard holders as well as members.  Apologies for not picking up that it was no longer possible to pay on the gate.  We understand that everyone was admitted on Monday but that people were informed that this would be a one off.  As a Trust we do not feel that sufficient time or publicity was given to fans to obtain a matchcard free of charge and we have written to the club to request dialogue and that the matter is re-considered.

Hull City Ladies
The Tigresses went down to a 2-0 defeat against high flying Blakburn Rovers last Sunday, but there were plenty of positives in the performance.

This Sunday the Ladies are back at home against Fylde who have also had mixed results so far this season and probably a game the Tigresses are targeting to win. Please note this match kicks off at 3pm, (an hour later than usual), at the Hull University Sports Ground on Inglemire Lane.

Weekly News Update

City signed off before the international break last weekend with another defeat to Derby. It was however a more positive performance than the 4-0 drubbing four days earlier.

To be fair Derby could have had the game sewn up before half time after Jordy De Wijs gave away a penalty and the visitors missed a couple more chances including hitting the woodwork. City then regrouped and second half produced a much more pleasing performance, scored a nice team goal and could have gone into win the game.

Disappointingly this sides’ Achilles heel struck again with a piece of sloppy defending gifting Derby a late winner. It was perhaps slightly harsh on the Tigers but if you don’t learn your lessons in this league then teams will punish you.

There is no championship football this weekend as England play Spain in their First Nations League match.

Here’s your update from the Trust…

Supporters Direct Competition

Development Review
The Development sides continue to show signs of improvement and these should hopefully be translating to wins in the near future.

Last Saturday the u18 side travelled down to Wales to take on Cardiff City.  We are a young side who are still finding their way and went down 3-1 with Dan Hawkins finding the net for our side.  Tomorrow they have the chance to bounce back against Queens Park Rangers at Bishop Burton College in an 11:00 kick off.

Tuesday saw the u23 side embark on the long journey to take on Bristol City.  Keane Lewis-Potter was on target again for the Young Tigers as they earned a hard fought 1-1 draw.  The side is next in action on Monday night when they take on Watford at the Roy West Centre in a 19:00 kick-off.

Last week we reported that there had been a change in the pricing policy of under 23 games which abolished concessions.  This week we are pleased to note that free admission to games has been extended to any supporter with a match card.  This is a great gesture which can save supporters £24 until the end of the season and if it results in more people backing the youngsters it has to be a good thing.  Well done Hull City – more details can be found here.

Hull City Ladies
After a hard fought cup win last weekend, the Ladies return to league action on Sunday away to Blackburn Rovers.

Rovers won their only league fixture so far 9-0 against Doncaster Belles a couple of weeks back, so the Tigresses will need to raise their game against their inform opponents.

Please join the Trust

To all Hull City Supporters,

As you will no doubt be aware, Nigel Adkins newly assembled but generally young-looking squad have ensured a difficult start to the new season, and it’s already looking like a long 8 months ahead.

Whether the moderate support from the Club owners to replace the exodus of players leaving over the summer period is enough to ensure another relegation battle can be avoided remains to be seen, but most fans are rightly concerned.

We have been in direct contact with the club via numerous e-mails and face to face meetings in recent months on various issues affecting the wider fan base, but despite documenting our concerns in a formal capacity, the Club have simply continued to ignore our requests for clarity and feedback on the issues raised.

As a Trust Board, we will always have the interests of our members at the forefront of everything we do, and as the Club have failed to engage with our reasonable requests, we have now escalated our concerns to the English Football League, Football Supporters Federation and Supporters Direct.

All 3 have acknowledged we have legitimate concerns and will be contacting the Club senior management on our behalf. (We will of course keep our members informed once we receive relevant responses and feedback)

Now like no other time, is the time for all Hull City supporters to pull together. Together we will be stronger, with greater likelihood of success for reuniting our fan base and re-igniting the enjoyment of OUR club that we cherish so dearly.

So, whether you have previously been a member of the Hull City Supporters Trust or not, we urge you to renew your membership or sign up with us. There are currently 3 available options:

1. 1 year – £5 (Just £2 for junior members aged 16 or under)

2. 3 years – £11 (which includes an exclusive HCST badge & car sticker)

3. Lifetime – £41 (which includes the badge, car stickers, your name on the Life Member listing on our website & also the choice of a HCST pint glass or copy of the acclaimed book ’46 & Counting’ by Ian Bunton)

All our members receive a weekly newsletter by e-mail, and we also have a range of competitively priced merchandise, with plans for greater member involvement. Your HCST membership also entitles you to numerous discounts via our partners which can be found here. Just using one partner discount can recoup the cost of your entire membership!

This link will take you to our website where you can sign up. It takes only a few minutes to complete the application and your HCST membership pack will be posted straight away once payment has been completed.

If you are already a member then why not encourage a family member or friend to join – we all must know a City supporter that we can ask to sign up.

The Hull City Supporters Trust Board will continue to represent our members and the wider Hull City fan base and will do whatever is necessary to improve the relationship with our club forward in the future.

Please re-join or sign up us as your support would be greatly appreciated. We are in this together!

Thank you.

Weekly News Update

The last week has brought two games to forget for City. Six goals conceded, none scored, no league points and an exit from the Carabao Cup! Even more alarming is that with the loan deadline looming it appears (at the time of writing) that there will be few if any of the desperately needed additions.

City were poor at Stoke, not even mustering a solitary shot on target against a team low on confidence. Things then got worse in midweek with a 4-0 hammering against Derby County. In fairness Nigel Adkins did make a plethora of changes and if there is any positive to take it is the debuts for young academy players. However, perhaps the squad should have sufficient quality in depth so blooding youngsters is a choice, not a necessity?

City can put things right on Saturday against….Derby County again. It seems not to happen that you get the same result when two teams play each other in successive games and we sincerely hope it isn’t another moral crushing defeat! However, the chances of City pulling off a win seem remote. That coupled with a what looks like a lack of new signings doesn’t build much excitement for the season ahead.

Here’s your update from the trust this week…

FA Backs the Safe Standing Campaign
This week the FA come out in favour of clubs being allowed to introduce standing areas ay games.

This means that now all four of the major stakeholders (The FA, The EFL, the Permier League & Supporters Groups) are in favour of Safe Standing and want to see the current laws changed.

More details can be found here on the Football Supporters Federation website.

HCST – A Thank You
Following the clear unrest shown by supporters this week we thank our members and wider fan base for the support shown to HCST on social media and within the various forums and fans groups.

We’ve always tried not to disrupt match preparation so the International break comes at a good time. We have raised our concerns at national level with the EFL, SD & FSF and will advise our members and the wider Hull City fan base in due course.

Development Review
This week’s performances by the Development sides showed a marked improvement albeit not ultimately translating to results.

On Saturday the u18 side went down 1-0 to a physically strong Ipswich Town side at Bishop Burton.  Tomorrow they face a long trip down to Wales in search of their first win of the season when they take on Cardiff City in an 11:00 kick-off

Monday saw the u23 side’s first game at their new ‘home’ ground the Roy West Centre.  After a tentative start which saw them go 0-2 down early in the second half they came back strongly and in the end went down 1-2 to a pacey Millwall side.  Keane Lewis-Potter scored the Young Tigers goal with a diving header.  The side is next in action on Tuesday night when they travel down to Bristol City for a 19:00 kick-off.

One interesting development noted on Monday was the match pricing of the u23 game.  Previously at North Ferriby non-members paid £4 and concessions £2.  At the Roy West all non-members are charged £3 thereby abolishing the concession price and removing the anomaly with pricing at the KCOM.

Hull City Ladies
The Ladies were good value for a point in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Derby County Ladies last Sunday and look as though they’re finding their feet in their new League. (Nigel Adkins was amongst the crowd in the pouring rain)

This Sunday they’re home again but this time hosting Bradford City Ladies in the FA WPL Cup. Kick off is 2pm at the Hull University Sports Ground on Inglemire Lane.

It’ll be good to see one Hull City team progress in a cup competition……….

Weekly News Update

City finally got their first win of the season on Tuesday with an entertaining 3-2 victory away at Rotherham Utd. City could have scored more although it was a good job they found the back of the net three times as there was still more poor defending on show which blighted the team all last season.

The victory over Rotherham was very much welcome after what can only be described as a very abject display against Blackburn three days previous. The less said about that, the better.

This Saturday the Tigers head to recently relegated Stoke City looking for two consecutive away wins. Whilst a six point haul from the two games this week would be a fantastic return we suspect Nigel Adkins would be happy with four points earned. However City should be full of confidence and are capable of a victory.

Safe journey to all those travelling, here’s your update from the Trust…

Carol Thomas – National Football Museum
Carol Thomas, former England captain and valued HCST member, has finally had her contribution to the Womens game recognised by the National Football Museum.

Carol, who played over 50 times for her country in an international career spanning 11 years, is honoured in a blog on the National Football Museum website.

More details on her career can be found here in an article on our website.

HCST Statement – 24th August 2018
The Trust have released a statement regarding recent engagement with the club.

You can read the statement here.

Development Review
The summer release of players and the call up of so many of last season’s under 23 side to the first team squad has meant that the Development sides currently being fielded are fairly young.

The relative inexperience can be detrimental to results and this week has proved to be a chastening one.

Last Saturday the under 18 side travelled to the capital to take on Crystal Palace (current Southern u18 PDL Champions) and incurred a 5-0 defeat.  Whilst on Monday the under 23 side also travelled south to take on an experienced Ipswich Town side and they too suffered a heavy defeat losing 8-0.

Both sides will be hoping to bounce back this Bank Holiday weekend.  The under 18 side return to action on Saturday when they take on Ipswich Town at Bishop Burton in an 11:00 kick-off.  On Monday the under 23 side will be at their new base of the Roy West Centre when they take on Millwall in a 19:00 kick off.  As before, the prices are; member free, adults £4 and concessions £2.  We understand that there is parking available at the near-by University.

Needless to say the lads would appreciate your support, so if it is a pleasant evening why not stroll down.

Hull City Ladies
Hull City Ladies suffered a heavy home defeat in their opening league fixture of the season, losing 4-0 to Stoke City Ladies, but the scoreline was not a reflection of the game or their performance

This Sunday they’re at home again and will be aiming for a better result against Derby County Ladies (The first of 3 competitive City v Derby fixtures next week!!)

As ever, a 2 o’clock kick off at the Hull University Sports Ground on Inglemire Lane.

Don’t forget HCST members get a 20% discount on production of your membership card and all kids get in free

Rotherham Utd Review and Stoke City Preview – Kathryn Batte

By Kathryn Batte
Three Points Never Seemed So Good: Irvine the star at Rotherham as City Look to Extend Unbeaten Away Run at Strugglers Stoke

Things change quickly in football. Despite the physical demands, that games come thick and fast in the Championship means players have the opportunity to put right a bad performance or result. That’s exactly what the Tigers did on Tuesday night, securing their first three points of the season with a 3-2 win at Rotherham.

Nigel Adkins’ team didn’t get off to the start they wanted, however, and it was once again their defensive frailties which handed the home side the lead. Failing to deal with a simple set piece into the box, City were 1-0 down after 16 minutes when Richard Wood rose highest to head past Marshall. The score-line was harsh on Adkins’ men who had played some good football prior to conceding. Markus Henriksen’s 30-yard strike had produced a good save from goalkeeper Marek Rodák and Reece Burke fired over after Dan Batty’s shot was well blocked.

The Tigers pulled themselves deservedly level when Evandro played a delightful ball over the Rotherham defence for Jackson Irvine to finish well at a tight angle. It was down the left-hand side where City looked most dangerous in the first half and they managed to take advantage just before the break. Frazier Campbell met Eric Lichaj’s cross to deftly place the ball into the far corner of the net to put the Tigers 2-1 ahead.

After throwing leads away in the first two games of the season, it was important for City to make sure they didn’t concede early in the second half. It got even better for the Tigers when Irvine got his second following a neat counter attack. Campbell did well to hold off his man before feeding Bowen who played in the Australian to make it 3-1. Bowen continued to cause the home side problems and had a good chance to make it 4-1 shortly after but Rodák produced a fine double save to keep out the winger and then Will Keane at the rebound.

Old demons returned with 15 minutes to go as Rotherham made it 3-2 to ensure a nervy finish for Adkins’ team. Failing to stop a cross into the box, Jordy de Wijs was beaten to the first header and Jamie Procter got in-between Burke and Todd Kane to win the second and put his side back in it. City looked vulnerable as the home side piled forward, but the 1225 away fans stepped up the noise with the Tigers manager giving them every encouragement. After Semi Ajayi missed a great opportunity to level the scores deep into stoppage time, City just about crawled over the line to secure their first victory of the season.

The reaction when the players went over to greet their supporters at the full-time whistle was much different to the reception they received following Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers. Whilst being far from the perfect performance, with obvious defensive issues very much still a concern, Nigel Adkins’ side showed they had a bit of fight in them and a willingness to work for each other to get a result. They were helped by Rotherham’s missed chances and as Jackson Irvine said in his post-match interview, this was a game they expected and ought to win.

One area City have to improve in is defending set pieces and balls into the box. Tomorrow they travel to a Stoke side who are yet to win this season and suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to newly promoted Wigan on Wednesday. However, memories of Peter Crouch scoring with almost his first touch at the Britannia Stadium two years ago risk being repeated if the Tigers fail to tackle their defensive weaknesses. The Potters were tipped by many to be title contenders this season but have struggled to adapt to life in the Championship after 11 years. This is arguably a great chance for Adkins’ side to extend their unbeaten away run but the pressure is on Gary Rowett who will be desperate to end their miserable start to the campaign.

Carol Thomas – National Football Museum

Following on from the HCST article about one of Hull’s greatest ever footballing internationals and valued HCST member, see here, the Trust can now report that the National Football Museum has finally recognised Carol Thomas as one of the true pioneers and legends of the womens game.

Her links with Hull City AFC run long a deep, with a couple of appearances for England at the old Boothferry Park, training at Boothferry Park with Hull City Minors under Pete Sissons for 5+ years in the early 80’s and being managed at England level by Martin Reagan (former Hull City winger).

A visit to the NFM will reveal a number of Hull City related objects, including a headline from a Sheffield Newspaper in which the ‘Owls maul the Tigers’, photos of a beach hut like structure purporting to be a Hull City AFC ticket office from Boothferry Park in the 80’s and the sale of the north end of Boothferry Park to clear debts and allow the erection of a local supermarket!

However, despite the great and the good that have donned the black and amber of Hull City, including England representatives like Raich Carter, Stuart Pearson and more recently Nick Barmby and Harry Maguire, not one player makes it into a display or the Hall of Fame.

However, following a day of chatting and discussions with the Collections Staff at the museum, the NFM have produced a blog under their #HiddenHistory project. The blog (found here) announces a ‘loan signing’ – read on – and gives a short resume of Carols career and thoughts about the 1984 European Final.

During the chat, Carol also agreed to loan her medal from that epic double headed final against Sweden, which England lost on penalties in the second leg at Kenilworth Road, Luton, to the Museum for a new display which will feature men and women internationals side by side.

Carol became England captain in 1976 and served her country for more than 11 years along the way becoming the first ever woman to gain an FA Coaching qualification, first to reach 50 caps and first to captain England for 50 times and her list of firsts stretches much beyond these.

In March, Carol unveiled a Lord Mayors Centenary Plaque in commemoration of Flo Bilton, another of Hulls great pioneers of the womens game making appearances on both Radio Humberside and BBC Look North. Carol also recently gave an inspiring question and answer session to the year 5 pupils at Clifton Primary School.

Surprisingly, HCST note that despite a glittering career, battling prejudices and barriers to the women’s game in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s, and a return to true grassroots to inspire a new generation of footballers, this is the first time the footballing establishment has acknowledged her commitment to and achievements in the womens game. The Trust has long advocated her induction into the Hall of Fame and will keep members up to date with Carols continued involvement in football.

Weekly News Update

If you had offered Nigel Adkins before last weekend a return from the Steel City with a league point against Sheffield Wednesday and progression in the Carabao Cup against Sheffield United then we imagine he would have been more than happy.

It was perhaps disappointing that City threw away leads in both games to draw however a point away from home is very valuable and it was pleasing to see some youth academy graduates play their part in the Cup victory. The team’s general play is of a reasonable standard and if a newly assembled defence can gel to start keeping clean sheets then things will start to look more positive.

City welcome Blackburn Rovers to the KCOM this Saturday, a game that will surely have a target of all 3 points. Nevertheless Blackburn have made a solid start to their return to the second tier and will provide a typical tough Championship test. City then have yet another Yorkshire Derby against Rotherham on Tuesday which is again a game City will be aiming to take points from.

Here’s your update from the trust this week…

Happy Birthday Ebenezer Cobb Morley!
Ebenezer Cobb Morley, regarded as the father of modern football, had his 187th Birthday honoured this week with a Google Doodle.

Morley was born in Hull on August 16, 1831. He is credited with codifying the laws of football as we know it today and organised the meeting in 1863 which led to the founding of the FA. More details on his life can be found here.

City Fan Ollie Harsley and City Fansite Tigerlink have been campaigning for a “Statue for Ebenezer” to be erected in his home town to commemorate him, a campaign which the Trust fully supports.

We hope that this international exposure will help to move the project forward.

Profits Without Fans
A recent BBC Sport article shows that City could have made almost a £20M profit in 2016/17 – even with an empty stadium.

More details can be found in the article here.

In the case of Hull City this is not the whole picture – Stadium Management Costs and Player Sales need to be taken into account. HCST Treasurer Pete Fleming has produced the following analysis which more truly reflects the sutuation:

Hull City vice-chairman Ehab Allam is quoted in the article as saying the fanbase is “crucial” to the club.

The Trust totally agree with this sentiment, and look forward to working with club to reverse the current trend in dwindling supporter numbers.

Development Review
It was a mixed weekend for the development squads.  On Saturday the under 18 side took on Coventry City at Bishop Burton College and were disappointing in the first half, leaving the field 0-2 down.

The half time talk must have been inspiring as there was a marked improvement in the second half with Rob Guilfoyle getting one back for the young Tigers who created a few more chances but went down 1-2 in the end.  Their next match is on Saturday away to Crystal Palace.

On Sunday the under 23 side occasionally rode their luck but were well worth their 2-0 victory against Colchester United at the KCOM.  Both goals were excellent with Tyler Hamilton scoring in the first half and Callum Smith in the second.  It was good to see that a number of supporters took advantage of the free admission and particular the number of youngsters who turned up and enjoyed themselves.  The next action is on Monday when they travel to Ipswich Town.

Young goalkeeper Charlie Andrew continues to impress on loan with Pickering Town.  He kept a clean sheet as they won in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round 0-2 at Bishop Aukland.

Hull City Ladies
The Ladies begin their new campaign in the FA WPL Premier League with a home game against Stoke City Ladies.

As usual, the match is being played at the Hull University Sports Ground on Inglemire Lane with a 2pm kick off. Good luck girls!

Hull City AFC v Blackburn Rovers – Kathryn Batte preview

By Kathryn Batte
The Rovers Return: City looking for first win against Blackburn

After progressing to the second round of the Carabao Cup following a penalty shoot-out victory over Sheffield Utd on Tuesday, Nigel Adkins will be hoping his side can continue that form into the league for the visit of Blackburn Rovers tomorrow.

The newly promoted side also won during the week, thumping League 2’s Carlisle United 5-1, and have started life in the Championship promisingly. An opening day 2-2 draw away to Ipswich Town showcased their attacking capabilities and only a fine goalkeeping performance from Millwall’s Jordan Archer stopped them from taking maximum points last Saturday. Rovers’ Bradley Dack was voted League One Player of the Year last season and has three goals in his last three games. Adam Armstrong, who signed from Newcastle at the end of the transfer window following a successful loan spell last season, scored twice on Tuesday and has the potential to cause the City defence problems.

A familiar face will also be making a return to the KCOM tomorrow. Danny Graham, who spent half of the 2013/2014 season on-loan to the Tigers, scored 13 goals for Blackburn last year but is yet to get off the mark this campaign. Graham only managed one goal in black and amber in what was a frustrating spell for the striker. However, the forward has a habit of scoring against his former teams with his only goal for City coming in a 1-0 away win against his old club Swansea.

Whilst Blackburn have shown they can score goals, Adkins will be encouraged by his side’s last two defensive performances. Following a poor start against Aston Villa, defender Jordy de Wijs was much improved against Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday, as was goalkeeper David Marshall who also produced some fine saves in Tuesday’s cup tie. There may be an injury concern over Reece Burke, who was forced off early in the first half on Tuesday, but Angus MacDonald would be a capable replacement should Burke be ruled out.

A first league goal for Fraizer Campbell last Saturday was encouraging and it’s hard to argue with the striker’s claim that this is the fittest he’s been in a long time. Jon Toral could have played his way into the starting XI following his midweek performance and Jackson Irvine may also have staked a claim. With City facing Rotherham next Tuesday, you feel that Adkins should be aiming for at least 4 points from his side’s next two games if they are to have any ambitions for this season. Both may be newly promoted sides but seem to possess a certain team camaraderie and City will have to prove if they take the lead, they can hold on to it.
