Match preview: Birmingham City v Hull City

City have the chance to regain top spot – on a Thursday? Mark Sellers takes a look ahead.

A Thursday fixture (which is in itself an oddity) and the second City league game in a week to be shown live on Sky.

The Tigers played well but failed to break down Sheffield Wednesday last Friday, and the game ended up 0-0. The other promotion contenders went on to secure good results after that with Brighton, Burnley, and Middlesbrough all winning over the weekend. Then on Tuesday Middlesbrough failed to take a golden opportunity to climb above the Tigers, losing 2-1 away at Blackburn.

All that means it’s very close at the top of the Championship, but the Tigers are still second and just a point off the top spot.

Birmingham have won just one game in their last five in the league, and Gary Rowett will be looking for his side to get their play-off ambitions back on track. The Blues are four points off the top six, although they do have a game in hand over Sheffield Wednesday, who occupy that final play-off spot.

City have no new injury or suspension concerns, but with the fixtures coming thick and fast Bruce may make some changes. Nick Powell impressed as a substitute against Wednesday, so could play a more prominent role.

The Tigers are again firm favourites with the bookies, with some quoting Birmingham as long as 3/1 for the home win.
